A beginner-friendly guide with real experience, fun facts, and the truth every photographer learns along the way.
When I first started my photography journey, I didn’t have a big fancy setup. No thousand-dollar lenses, no mirrorless body that could track a hummingbird in flight. I started with a simple Nikon digital camera under $800 — and guess what? It was perfect. It helped me fall in love with posing, storytelling, and artistic direction without overwhelming me with too much technical stuff.
And honestly? That’s the first lesson I share with anyone who’s ready to pick up a camera:
✨ It’s not about the most expensive camera. It’s about the camera that helps you create.
But choosing a camera today can feel like picking a favorite child... every brand swears they’re “the best,” every photographer has a strong opinion, and technology changes every five minutes. So here’s my journey, plus things I’ve learned from other photographers along the way, to help you make the best choice for your start.
My Journey: From Nikon Beginnings to a Mixed-Brand Life
Nikon was my first love. The colors were warm, the low-light performance was reliable, and it helped me through everything from early sessions to nighttime wedding photography. Nikon has always been known for their crisp night images, and I can testify... when the reception lights dim and everyone’s dancing, Nikon still delivers magic.
But then life, mentors, and collaboration shifted things.
When I started working closely with another photographer who uses Canon and whose lighting and lenses were all Canon-friendly — I realized how important compatibility is. Sometimes the best camera choice isn’t about specs, it’s about workflow. Canon’s layout felt so different from Nikon at first (Canon shooters are laughing right now because this is always the joke, the menus are like learning a new language). I learned how to use and love both systems.
And then… there was Sony.
I rented the Sony A7 once, and the hype is real. A few years ago, Sony was considered a giant in mirrorless tech — especially with autofocus so good it could track an eyelash. While Nikon and Canon have caught up since then, Sony is still the “techy nerd” favorite for good reason.

The One Piece of Advice I Wish Someone Told Me Sooner...
Get a mirrorless camera.
I’m serious. If you take anything from this blog, let it be that. Mirrorless technology changed my life and the lives of basically everyone who switched.
Here’s why photographers love mirrorless:
They’re lighter → Your wrists will thank you during long days or weddings.
They’re nearly silent → Amazing for ceremonies, newborn sessions, or behind-the-scenes.
Sharper images & cleaner detail → The sensor is designed to bring out crispness DSLRs can’t match.
Autofocus is faster → Like “blink and it locks onto your subject” fast.
You see exactly what the photo will look like in the viewfinder → No guessing, no praying, no surprises.
Fun fact: Some photographers say shooting mirrorless made them fall back in love with photography because it feels so intuitive and responsive. What Other Photographers Say About Choosing a First Camera
I’ve talked to a LOT of photographers Canon shooters, Nikon loyalists, Sony fanatics, and Fujifilm hipsters and here are their most honest opinions:
📸 Canon shooters“Canon colors look dreamy right out of camera… and the skin tones are unmatched.”They also swear by user-friendly menus and how natural Canon feels for beginners.
📸 Nikon photographers“Nikon is a workhorse.”They love the durability, low-light ability, and the more affordable used lens market.
📸 Sony shooters“Sony is the Tesla of cameras.”Powerful, modern, fast. Sony users brag about autofocus all the time — and they’re not wrong.
📸 Fujifilm lovers“Fujifilm feels like art.”Perfect for creative souls who love vintage vibes, film simulations, and street-style shooting.
📸 Every photographer ever“No matter what you buy, someone will swear you bought the wrong one.”And that’s okay, because it’s YOUR journey.
Fun Facts You’ll Love
✨ The Nikon vs. Canon “rivalry” has been going on for decades. It started with film cameras long before digital photography existed.
✨ Mirrorless cameras don’t have a mirror box (hence the name), making them lighter and quieter than DSLRs.
✨ Sony didn’t start as a camera giant — they were originally famous for electronics and gaming. Now they’re one of the top mirrorless leaders.
✨ 90% of photographers say that the lens matters more than the camera body.
✨ Even with an $800 beginner camera, you can create magazine-worthy images with the right light and posing.
So… Which Camera Should YOU Get?
Here’s my honest advice — and what I would tell any friend:
1. Choose mirrorless.
This is your biggest long-term investment.
2. Choose a brand based on what feels natural in your hands.
Go into a store and hold them. The right camera should feel like an extension of you.
3. Pick a system you can grow with.
This includes lenses, rentals, workshops, and what your mentors or friends use.
4. Start simple if you’re a beginner.
You don’t need the $3,500 pro body right away. A solid mid-range mirrorless will take you SO far.
5. Remember: YOU make the art. Not the camera.
Your vision, posing, light, and storytelling matter more than any gear.

Final Thoughts: You Don’t Need the “Perfect” Camera to Start
If you’re reading this because you’re thinking about diving into photography, let me tell you something from experience:
✨ You’re already creative enough.✨ You’re already capable.✨ And you don’t need all the answers before you take your first shot.
The right camera is the one that helps you grow, explore, and fall in love with the art, just like mine helped me.
And if you ever want help choosing your camera, learning poses, or even tagging along for behind-the-scenes at my sessions… I’m always here, peach. 🍑💕
